This historic Auchentoshan distillery was founded in 1823, changing hands various times in its history and at one point enjoying popularity in Glasgow as the city’s closest distillery.
It was heavily damaged in World War 2, to this day a large pond sits at the back of the site which is actually a bomb crater and now is used for cooling purposes.
The distillery is rather unique in the almost exclusive use of a triple distillation method, which is more commonly seen among Irish Whiskey. Under its current owners, Japanese - American giant Beam Suntory Inc, the distillery is 100% focused on the production of single malt and is not used in blends. Most of the casks are finished in bourbon or sherry but a limited selection actually use French wine barrels.
Auchentoshan offerings have performed well at international spirit ratings competitions. Its 16- and 18-year scotches received double gold medals at the 2008 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. The Auchentoshan Three Wood expression won "the best Scotch Whisky and Cigar Combination" in the world.
